Dishwashers have become an indispensable kitchen appliance in today’s busy world. At Westside Plumbing, Inc., we understand how necessary they are for the modern homeowner. Don’t be caught by surprise when your dishwasher decides to call it quits. If you spot any of the four signs below, it may be time to replace this important kitchen machine.

How Do I Know When It's Time to Replace My Dishwasher?

1. Damaged Door

A damaged dishwasher door can be caused by a few different issues. Typically, a broken latch won’t even allow you to start the cycle. If the door is warped, this could be a sign of internal water damage. While it’s possible for the latch to be replaced, internal water damage is not a simple fix. Depending on the reason for the damaged door, you may need to replace this essential kitchen appliance.

2. Cold Dishes

Dishwashers scrub and clean dishes by utilizing extremely hot water. This is why your dishes are still quite hot when the cycle is complete. If the dishes are cold when you open the door, this could mean that the heating element isn’t working. The result is that your dishes are not being cleaned properly. While the element can be replaced, sometimes it costs just as much as if you replaced the dishwasher itself.

3. Dirty Dishes

There are several reasons why your dishes may still be dirty after a completed cycle. If there are food particles stuck in the filter located at the bottom of the dishwasher, this could be preventing your machine from doing its job properly. The next step would be to give your dishwasher a full cleaning, which means rinsing the filter in hot, soapy water and cleaning the spray-arm. Both of these components can get clogged. If this doesn’t work, then it may be time to start shopping for a new dishwasher.

4. Pooled Water

If you spot pooling water on the bottom of your dishwasher after a completed cycle, this is a sure sign your machine is not draining properly. Before replacing your dishwasher, though, check the drain to be sure it isn’t clogged. If all is well with the drain, then the problem is elsewhere and you may need a replacement dishwasher.
